"Beau Geste" (1939)

One pretty girl, three handsome men, a stolen jewel, and the French Foreign Legion - a combination that makes for a ripping adventure film! Susan's co-stars are (l. to r.) Robert Preston, Gary Cooper, and Ray Milland.

 

"Adam Had Four Sons" (1941)

Conniving: Bad girl Hester Stoddard pulls the wool over the eyes of her father-in-law (Warner Baxter), much to the shock of her brother-in-law Jack (Richard Denning).

 

"Among the Living" (1941)

Gold-digger Millie Pickens doesn't realize her mark is a crazed murderer (Albert Dekker).

 

"Reap the Wild Wind" (1942)

Romance on the sly: Drusilla Alston (Susan Hayward) is in love with Dan Cutler (Robert Preston), the dashing brother of one of her cousin's enemies - the sabotaging salvager King Cutler.

Drusilla out for a carriage ride with her pretty and high-spirited cousin, Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard).

 

"I Married a Witch" (1942)

Wallace Wooley (Frederic March, c.) and Dr. Dudley (Robert Benchley, l.) are cowed by Wallace's beautiful but willful fiancée Estelle.

 

"The Hairy Ape" (1944)

Susan stars as snotty socialite Mildred Douglas in the film adaptation of the famous play by Eugene O'Neill.

 

"Smash Up: The Story of a Woman" (1947)

Poster advertising the movie that made Susan a star. Her role as the alcoholic wife of a popular singer garnered her her first Academy Award nomination.

 

"Tulsa" (1949)

From cattle princess to oil queen: Cherokee Lansing strikes black gold on her property.

 

"Rawhide" (1951)

Vinnie Holt digging her way out of the room where she is almost certain to be killed if she stays there.
